Volunteers at the Museum are priceless and valuable. The Muskegon Heritage Museum offers many opportunities for Muskegon area residents to volunteer. With no paid staff at the museum, we are always looking for help.
After you have surveyed the opportunities and visited the museum, contact us by email, phone 231-722-1363 or the next time you visit the museum, and let us know how you’d like to help. If you can volunteer just two days a month, May to October we can increase the number of days we are open to the public. It helps the volunteer coordinator if you can volunteer the same days each month but that is not required.
An annual Volunteer Recognition and Appreciation Party is held at the end of the season. At the party, the Volunteer of the Year award winner is announced. If you were not able to volunteer this year, please think about helping the museum next year.
Museum Staffing (during open times)
We need volunteers who love to interact with our visitors and answer questions about the museum and our collection. Training for those assisting at the museum will be coordinated according to your time schedule.
There is a need for persons who are willing to search local records for upcoming exhibits. Whether that be at the Muskegon Public Library, Lakeshore Museum or some other reference locations.
Docents provide tours of the museum for school or other large group tours. The museum is set up to be self guided but a docent can provided extra information about our collection. You may be trained to run the printing press, steam engine or other equipment if you are interested!
As a volunteer-based organization we need people to assist with painting and repair of the museum structure and our equipment. One of our current projects is restoring our 1950s Army Battle Tank engine made by Continental Corporation.
